Growing up on an Iowa farm, I witnessed the miracle of childbirth and the ferocity of the mother instinct from an early age. So the human experience was a natural transition for me. My grandmother was a doula/midwife in the early 1900's and my mother a nurse in WWII. Medical and midwifery stories abounded. I received my bachelor degree in nursing from Creighton in 1980 and my medical degree from University of Iowa in 1984. I did my internship in internal medicine at the University of Colorado and residency at Fitzsimmons in Denver.
My mother encouraged me to choose obstetrics. She was right - the delivery room is the happiest place on earth! ( Disney World is a close second.)
My husband is a general surgeon and we have 6 children, ages 13-24. I enjoy bicycling, hiking, gardening and thrift store shopping (and reality TV)!
Birthing my own babies certainly influenced my respect for every woman I care for. An 18th century midwife manual states, “There is a tender regard one woman bears another and a natural sympathy in those that have gone thro' the Pangs of Childbearing; which occasions a compassion for those that labour under these circumstances, which no man can be a judge of.” Handing a mother her newborn, and the awe of these first moments is an unending joy of my profession.
Having now almost raised my children, I also enjoy being able to spend time furthering my medical education and skills by attending meetings and training in new procedures. I belong to the Association of Laparoscopists as well as our professional college and am a certified menopause practioner through the North American Menopause Society I perform 99% of my gynecology surgeries through minimally invasive techniques and have most recently added surgical robotic skills to my practice, allowing patients a less painful and much shorter post-operative recovery. The single best thing I have done in the last few years is adding e-mail to my practice. My patients appreciate being able to contact me directly with questions and it allows me to relay test results in a timely fashion.
I enjoy helping women through life stages. I am amazed at the heartache and trials I see women endure and am honored to be a part of every one of my patients’ lives.
